Fire Retardant Treatments for Schools and Education

Treat classroom curtains, hall drapes, wall displays, art work and timber in schools, colleges, universities and nurseries. Clear, water-based and made in the UK.

Schools and colleges hold a lot of material that burns easily: curtains and blackout drapes, stage curtains in the hall, paper and card wall displays, art and craft projects, and costumes and scenery for school productions. A fire retardant treatment slows ignition and reduces flame spread across these surfaces.

Flametect Nitro treats natural, synthetic and blended fabrics and also suits paper, card and decorative materials. Flametect C is ideal for natural materials such as cotton, paper, cardboard and papier mache, and Flametect CWD+ treats interior and exterior wood, including cladding, decking and structural timber.

Where It Is Used

  • Classroom curtains and blackout drapes
  • School hall stage curtains and backdrops
  • Paper and card wall displays and corridor art
  • Art, craft and design and technology projects
  • Costumes, props and scenery for school productions
  • Timber cladding, decking and structural timber

Keeping Records for Your Fire Risk Assessment

In England and Wales, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person for a school to carry out a fire risk assessment. Treated displays and furnishings form part of that picture, so keep a record of what was treated and when.

Every order includes a free Statement of Performance certificate for your treated area, and iron-on fabric labels let you mark treated textiles. Re-treat fabrics after any wet washing and re-treat displays when new material goes up.

Certifications & Performance

Flametect Nitro is tested to BS 5867 Part 2 Type B for curtains and drapes, BS 5438 and BS EN 13773 Class 1. Flametect C is tested to BS 5867 Part 2 Type B by the UKAS-accredited BTTG laboratory. Flametect CWD+ is tested to BS476 Class 0 and Class 1 for timber.
