Yacht & Marine Fire Regulations (MGN 453)

Please Note :

Eco-Sol Ltd continues to manufacture Flametect NX2, a marine flame retardant tested to International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and Fire Testing Procedures (FTP) standards. Since its introduction, NX2 has consistently maintained compliance with these international standards.

Regarding UK regulations, the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) introduced MGN 453 in 2012 to improve fire safety on vessels, which was later updated to MGN 580 in 2020. As of late 2025, Eco-Sol Ltd has decided not to re-enter the MGN 580 scheme. This decision is due to audit inefficiencies and the escalating costs associated with the sole Nominated Body, alongside a perceived lack of ongoing support for the scheme from the MCA. These factors have made formal participation financially unviable.

The Way Forward

While Flametect NX2 continues to conform to the fire testing procedures of MGN 580 and IMO/FTP standards, we cannot formally claim MGN 580 compliance because we do not participate in the specific audit system required by the Nominated Body.

We are currently collaborating with European and international compliance authorities to establish an audit system that meets or exceeds the requirements of MGN 580.

Application Requirements

Under Statutory Instrument 1999 1957, flame retardants under MGN 453 complying to IMO 2010 (FTP) Code must be applied by a Service Provider that is approved by a Nominated UK Body.
