Bromine-Free Flame Retardants
Independently tested. UK manufactured. Free of bromine, halogens and formaldehyde.
About This Range
Every product in this range is completely free of bromine, halogens and formaldehyde. As the EU moves toward restricting aromatic brominated flame retardants under REACH, choosing a halogen-free product is not just better for the environment — it is increasingly important for compliance, procurement and the health of the people around treated materials.
Flametect bromine-free flame retardants achieve certified fire protection through a different chemical mechanism. Rather than releasing halogen radicals during combustion, they work by forming a protective char layer, releasing non-toxic gases that dilute oxygen, or absorbing heat energy — delivering the same certified performance without the associated health and environmental risks of brominated chemistry.
Why Choose a Bromine-Free Flame Retardant?
Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) have been widely used since the 1970s, but the evidence against them has been building steadily. Many BFRs, particularly polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), do not chemically bind to the materials they treat. They leach out over time, accumulate in household dust, enter the food chain and build up in people and animals.
Research has linked chronic BFR exposure to endocrine disruption, neurotoxic effects, immune system disruption and reproductive harm. When products containing BFRs burn, they can produce highly toxic dioxins and furans — making a fire in a BFR-treated building significantly more hazardous than one without.
In October 2025, the EU formally tightened concentration limits for PBDEs in products from 500 mg/kg to just 10 mg/kg. Procurement teams in hospitality, healthcare, education and public sector environments are already asking suppliers to confirm the halogen status of fire treatment products.
Bromine-Free Performance — No Compromise
Bromine-free does not mean less effective. Every product in this range is independently tested by UKAS-accredited laboratories and certified to multiple UK, European and international fire safety standards. Flametect Nitro holds certifications to nine international standards including BS 5867 Part 2 Type B, USA NFPA 701 and California Fire Marshal Title 19 Section 1237. Flametect CWD+ is tested to BS 476 Class 0 and Class 1 and EN 13501-1 Euroclass B-s1,d0.
All products are developed and manufactured in the UK by Eco-Sol Ltd in an ISO 9001 quality-assured environment, in partnership with a Queen's Award for Enterprise-winning chemical manufacturer.
