What is this product?
How Flametect Nitro Works
Flametect Nitro works by penetrating absorbent textile fibres and depositing flame-retardant chemistry deep within the material structure. When exposed to flame or intense heat, this chemistry disrupts the combustion process, reducing the rate at which the fabric ignites, limiting the spread of flame across the surface and suppressing smoke production. The result is a treated material that behaves very differently in a fire, without any visible change to its appearance in normal use.
The formula dries completely clear, has no detectable odour once dry, and does not alter the feel, drape or colour of treated fabrics. It is non-corrosive to metallic threads, trims, zips and hardware, making it safe for use on a wide range of garments, furnishings and specialist textiles. Developed and manufactured in the UK by Eco-Sol Ltd in partnership with a Queen's Award for Enterprise-winning chemical manufacturer, every batch is produced to ISO 9001 standards.
Flametect Nitro contains no bromine, halogens or formaldehyde. This is increasingly significant as EU and UK regulators move toward restricting aromatic brominated flame retardants, which are linked to endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity and environmental persistence. Flametect Nitro achieves the same certified fire performance through a safer chemical mechanism, with no compromise on results.
Key Benefits of Flametect Nitro
- Dries completely clear — no residue, sheen or change to the fabric's appearance or texture.
- Non-toxic and skin-friendly — neutral pH formula tested as non-irritant, safe for guest and skin contact textiles.
- Bromine and halogen free — no toxic gases produced on combustion, no environmental persistence, compliant as EU restrictions on brominated flame retardants tighten.
- Broad material compatibility — works on natural fibres, synthetics, blends, foams, paper, card and many decorative materials.
- High active solids content — active solids deliver stronger performance with less product required.
- Dry-clean durable — flame retardancy lasts up to 10 dry-clean cycles; re-treat after wet washing.
- Non-corrosive — safe on metallic threads, trims, zips, buttons and hardware.

What Flametect Nitro Cannot Do
The material must be absorbent for the treatment to penetrate and work effectively. It is not suitable for:
- Non-absorbent or impermeable materials
- Artificial flowers — results vary widely, always test a sample first
- Previously treated, coated or sealed surfaces
- Materials that cannot tolerate moisture during application
Re-treatment is required after any wet washing. Coverage will vary depending on textile weight and porosity — heavier or denser fabrics will absorb more product per m².

How to Apply
Simple application with standard tools — no specialist equipment required.
-
1Prepare the materialEnsure the fabric or material is clean, dry and free from any existing coatings, sealants or finishes. Remove dust and loose fibres. Test a small hidden area first if unsure about compatibility.
-
2Apply evenlyApply using a spray, roller, brush or by immersion. Work across the material in controlled, light passes rather than heavy saturation — the aim is even penetration, not surface soaking. Ensure full coverage with no missed areas.
-
3Allow to absorbAllow the product to fully absorb into the material. Heavier or denser textiles may require more product. Do not over-apply — excess product sitting on the surface will not improve performance.
-
4Dry naturallyAllow treated items to dry in a well-ventilated area. Most materials are ready within 2–3 hours at room temperature. Do not tumble dry or apply heat during drying.

No. Flametect Nitro dries completely clear with no residue, sheen or change to the colour, texture or drape of treated materials. Once dry, the treated fabric is indistinguishable from untreated fabric in normal use.
Yes. The formula has a neutral pH and has been independently tested as non-irritant. It is widely used in hotels, care homes and nurseries on guest-contact textiles including bedding, curtains and upholstery.
Flametect Nitro works on most absorbent natural, synthetic and blended textiles including cotton, linen, wool, polyester, nylon, viscose, velvet, muslin and many mixed-fibre fabrics. It also works on foams, sponges, paper, card, hay, straw and many absorbent decorative materials. The material must be absorbent — non-porous or impermeable surfaces will not absorb the treatment.
Flame retardancy is durable through up to 10 dry-clean cycles. Re-treatment is required after any wet washing, heavy rain exposure, or if the material has been significantly worn or abraded.
Yes. Apply by spray using a pump or trigger sprayer, working in even, overlapping passes to ensure full coverage. Allow to dry in place with adequate ventilation. Avoid spraying near furniture, flooring or surfaces that could be affected by overspray.
Coverage is typically 7–10 m² per litre depending on the weight and porosity of the material — lighter fabrics cover more, heavier or denser textiles absorb more product. Use our coverage calculator above for a specific recommendation based on your area.
Yes — a bespoke Statement of Performance certificate is included free with every order. Full test certificates and Safety Data Sheets are also available to download from the Documents section above.
Yes — this is one of the most common professional applications for Flametect Nitro. It is used by theatres, opera companies, hotels, schools, care homes and public venues across the UK to meet fire safety compliance requirements.
