What is this product?
Flametect CWD+ works differently from surface coatings. Rather than sitting on top of the wood, its water-based formula penetrates deep into the timber grain, where it chemically converts the wood to carbon when exposed to flame or intense heat. This charring process slows ignition, reduces surface flame spread and suppresses smoke — giving people more time to evacuate and fire services more time to respond.
The result is certified fire protection with no visible evidence it is there. The wood looks, feels and behaves exactly as it would untreated — no sheen, no film, no discolouration. Developed and manufactured in the UK by Eco-Sol Ltd in partnership with a Queen's Award for Enterprise-winning chemical manufacturer, every batch is produced to ISO 9001 standards.
Key Benefits of Flametect CWD+
- Invisible protection — dries to a natural, clear finish with no discolouration or sheen
- Safe and sustainable — 100% water-based, VOC-free, non-toxic and non-irritant
- Durable outdoors — weather-resistant and non-leaching; the flame retardant is locked in with specialist couplers that resist moisture and UV, verified by BS EN 927-6 accelerated weathering testing
- Easy to apply — brush, roller, low-pressure spray or immersion; suitable for DIY and professional use
- Compatible with finishes — can be over-coated with Osmo clear or colour finishes once fully cured (contact us for guidance on specific products)
- Non-corrosive — safe for use around stainless, galvanised and treated metal fixings; fully breathable

What Flametect CWD+ Cannot Do
Flametect CWD+ is a reaction-to-fire treatment, not a structural fire resistance product. It is not suitable for:
- Previously painted, varnished, oiled or waxed surfaces
- Composite boards including those with veneers, plywood, cork or laminates
- Upgrading a standard door to a certified fire door
- Achieving 30 or 60 minute structural fire resistance (BS476 Parts 21/22)

How to Apply
Simple application with standard tools — no specialist equipment required.
-
1Prepare the surfaceThe timber must be bare, clean and dry, with a moisture content below 20%. Remove all existing paint, varnish, oil, wax or sealant before treatment. Sand rough or uneven surfaces lightly if needed to improve penetration.
-
2Apply the first coatApply generously along the grain using a brush, roller or low-pressure sprayer. Work the product into the surface and allow it to fully soak in. Do not spread too thin — the wood should visibly absorb the liquid. Allow 1–4 hours between coats.
-
3Apply the second coatA second coat is required to achieve the full certified treatment rate of 250 ml/m². Apply in the same way as the first coat and allow the product to penetrate fully. Avoid applying in direct sunlight or strong wind.
-
4Allow to cureAllow a minimum of 24 hours drying time at 20°C before light use, and 48 hours before exposure to rain or heavy use. The wood may appear slightly damp immediately after application — this is normal and will dry to a fully clear, natural finish.

No — Flametect CWD+ is a clear, penetrating treatment that soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top as a film. Once dry, the natural colour and texture of the surface remain completely visible with no discolouration or sheen.
Yes. Once fully cured (48 hours), the treated surface can be painted, stained, oiled or varnished as normal, including with Osmo coatings. The treatment does not affect adhesion of most common finishes.
Yes — Flametect CWD+ is 100% water-based, VOC-free and non-toxic, making it safe to use indoors with normal ventilation. Once fully cured, treated surfaces are safe for everyday household contact.
Flametect CWD+ is not suitable for previously painted or varnished surfaces, plywood, cork or laminated boards, and cannot be used to upgrade standard doors to certified fire doors or achieve 30/60 minute fire resistance ratings.
Because the treatment penetrates the wood rather than sitting on the surface, it is long-lasting and not removed by normal cleaning. For exterior applications we recommend reapplication every 3–5 years.
Yes — a bespoke Statement of Performance certificate is included free with every order. Full test certificates and Safety Data Sheets are also available to download from the Documents section above.
Apply 250ml per m² for the full fire protection rating. Use our coverage calculator above to get a specific recommendation based on your area.
Yes — Flametect CWD+ is independently tested to BS EN 927-6 for accelerated weathering, making it suitable for permanent exterior use including cladding, decking and log cabins.
